I wanted to portray this pose but initially had no idea in what context to set it. The figure seemed to be looking at something so I placed it in a gallery viewing Singer Sarjeant's portrait of 'Madame X'. Her dress is off the shoulder and caused an outrage at the time, so I decided to replicate this in my painting and gave it the title 'Scandalous'.
